Scene: Bridge, USS HOOD
Lieutenant Commander Compass leaned back in the command chair and fought the urge to drum his fingers along the armrest.  He was trying to project an appearance of calm command.  Unfortunately he knew he was failing and that the bridge crew, while respectful, were seeing him as he actually was, a seat warmer.  Right now almost the entire senior staff was in danger on the planet surface and here he was in command of one of the most powerful vessels in the quadrant and all he was really in charge of was making sure the ship maintained orbit.  He wasn’t even really in charge of that, there was both a navigator and helmsman, not mention the laws of physics, on top of that major accomplishment.
No one had even brought him coffee.
He wanted to do *something* not only because, like everyone else aboard, he genuinely feared for the lives of his fellow officers below but because he wanted to prove that he was an officer who could contribute, someone who could save the day, overcome the impossible.  It was those officers who moved up the chain of command.  Those officers who were trusted with ships of their own.  He was desperate to be one of those officers.
Up til now his few opportunities at command of HOOD had come at unexciting moments.  The Grave Shift when the ship was in transit or even less thrilling, when it was sitting in spacedock.  Compass was an exceptional navigator and a solid officer; he wouldn’t be on a starship if he hadn’t been.  But he needed to prove himself as a command officer and this was the perfect time to do it.  He just had no idea what he could do to show everyone what he was made of.
At this point his only hope was that the Science Officer could pull some trick out of her hat, something that required him to make a decision.  Of course it would be of tremendous help if that something saved the day.
On the other hand he thought grimly as his fingers drummed along the armrest.  If the senior staff died on the planet he just might make first officer.
