NOTES
=====
The PTOLEMY-class starships were designed as exploration vessels in the early
2200's.  For their time, they were formidable vesselsably protected against
the unknown dangers of deep space.

All that changed with Nero's arrival in the Romulan timeship NARADA.  The USS
KELVIN, a PTOLEMY-class ship, was the first to respond to the NARADA's incursion,
and was completely outmatched by their 24th-century opponent.  Only the ramming
of the NARADA by CDR Samuel Kirk saved the ship and most of its crew.

After that, changes in Federation policy and starship design effectively brought
an end to the PTOLEMY-class, now seeing duty in inner-system pickets or, more
frequently, as training vessels.  Starfleet Academy has several of these ships
permanently assigned to them for their cadet cruise graduation exercise.
