The HIPPOCRATES-class Medical Cruiser is designed for rapid deployment to
major medical emergencies. The vessel is self-sufficient, capable of
operation in hostile areas not reachable by the smaller Nightingale Class
vessel. The medical staff consists of some dozen Star Fleet doctors and
nearly eighty staff. Further, the medical complement is often augmented
by as many as eighty medical-trained civilians. Also, nearly all
personnel serving on a HIPPOCRATES will have some medical traning and
nearly sixty percent will be qualified to serve as emergency medical
technicians should the situation warrant.

The potential for the ship to be deployed to cover a planet-wide
emergency in hostile regions has resulted in the development of a
quad-nacelle system. With both primary and secondary hulls equipped with
a pair of nacelles, both sections of the ship are capable of independent
warp speed operations. This allows a single ship to cover a much larger
volume of space in search and resue operations or to effectively be able
to beam down to multiple sites on any area of a planet's surface without
altering orbit.

Embarked craft also serve as medical vessels. The 2 embarked runabouts
carry medical suites capable of fully treating 6 patients. The 4 D-warp
shuttles carry medical suites for temporary care and transport of a
single patient. These allow for quick transfer of patients to
specialized centers of treatment if absolutely necessary.

Being a medical cruiser by design, the HIPPOCRATES has an expanded
sickbay/medical center, filling in much of the unused hull space of
similar sized designs. The Science Labs have also been expanded in a
similar manner. These expansions of scientific and medical facilities
have created a need for reduced crew living spaces, making the quarters
more remminiscent of a destroyer than most of the cruisers in the fleet.
